Ellen M. Fiato (nee Mulloy), of Vestal NY, passed away on Wednesday, February 7, 2024 at Mercy House of the Southern Tier in Endicott, NY. She was surrounded by and is survived by her husband, George Fiato (to whom she was married 55 years); her children, Michael Fiato (Minneapolis), Scout Orr (James) and Katie Mosher (Kyle); grandchildren, Kaia, Cort, Harper, Finley, James and Ethan; her brother, the Honorable Patrick A. Mulloy (Marjorie); nephew, Dr. Daniel Mulloy (Michele); nieces, Dr. Maura Mulloy (Jonathon Anderson), Claire Parker (Andrew).
Many who will read this know of Ellen's legendary and well-deserved reputation as very arguably one of the most dedicated and passionate first grade teachers to have ever stepped into a classroom. Teaching first grade for her was tantamount to breathing. It was simply her life's calling, and she loved every minute of it. She finally and funnily enough reluctantly retired in 2018 at the age of 80 after 55 years of service at Brookside Elementary School in the Susquehanna Valley School District. Occasionally in subsequent years she would often, in an understatedly, politely sarcastic way, ask various family members if she had perhaps retired too early. It is an understatement to say she cared deeply about the generations of students, and colleagues she encountered over the decades. Her teaching career and experiences were always foremost in and on her mind second only to her unparalleled love for her children.
Ellen's family unreservedly conveys its beyond heartfelt thanks to the indefatigably thoughtful, and genuinely caring staff at the aforementioned Mercy House.
